it’s that time of week to introduce another wedding item i’ve made in the past in honor of #tbt #fbf! i love love love working on wedding items, be it paper, fabric, ribbon, crafts, anything. being able to communicate with a couple who is ready to take their first big step together makes me equally as happy for them and in turn, myself.

this couple got married on november 22nd (11/22), a date also known as “the good (married) couple’s day”, as 11-22 can be read as ii-fuu-fu (the good husband and wife). the two live in singapore for the husband’s job but held their wedding in japan. since i make fully one-of-a-kind custom order items, most of the couples i work with have a very clear image of their wedding. these two were one of them. (aside from the items i made, the bride also worked on many other items, and like many a bride and groom, they worked on it until the very day of the wedding.)

their paper items (programs, name cards, thank you stickers, and after party flyers) were inspired by an illustration on an outdoor bathroom wall in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. they had asked me to recreate this wall, which was a very large amount of work, but definitely well worth it with their ecstatic reactions. the tallest and their favorite of the trees/plants on the wall was Mr. Banana Leaf, which became their “official” wedding logo.

今週もこの日が来ました！過去のウェディングアイテムを紹介する #tbt #fbf ブログ。ウェディングに携わるのは、本当に幸せいっぱいな気持ちになるので、大大大好きなお仕事なのです！ペーパーに限らず、ファブリック、リボン、クラフトを使って私の大好きな『デザイン＋手作り』に幸せな要素が加わるのですから。カップルが夫婦としての一歩を踏み出す日のためのご希望のイメージやアイデアを思う存分に教えてくださり、たくさんのコミュニケーションを交わしながら思い通りのアイテムに仕上げて行くのが私のお仕事。

今回のカップルは昨年の１１月２２日（いい夫婦の日）にご結婚されました。ご新郎のお仕事でシンガポールに滞在されており、ご結婚式は日本で挙げられました。完全オリジナルのデザインをしていると、ほとんどのお客様は、はっきりとしたイメージを持たれており、このお二人ももちろんその中。私が作ったアイテムの他に、たくさんのアイテムはご新婦様が考えられ、お二人で当日までガッツリ製作されていたようでした！

作ったアイテムは：席次表／メニュー／プロフィールを含めたウェディング冊子、席札、引き出物バッグのサンキューシールと二次会のフライヤー。その中心的存在となったのは、バナナリーフ君。シンガポール・ボタニカル・ガーデンズのお手洗いの壁に描かれた植物のイラストを再現し、植物達の中でも一番ご新郎様、ご新婦様が惚れ込んだのはバナナリーフ君なのです。再現するのにかなり手がかかったのですが、お二人のリアクションをいただいたら、本当にやりがいを感じました！！

i can’t believe it’s already been a week since last friday!!! this past week was “golden week” in japan, where a string of national holidays + the weekend make an extended vacation week. i try not to leave the house during this time, because out-of-towners from all over japan and the world crowd the whole city. in fact i always recommend to friends planning to visit from overseas to avoid this time of may. that said, since it is officially friday in japan, here’s this week’s #tbt #fbf post! explaining something a little different at japanese weddings.

今日はもう金曜日！！ゴールデンウイークもあってか今週もまたまたあっという間に過ぎてしまいました！毎年GW中は混雑を避ける為お出かけを控えるのですが、今年は２度都内に出かけました。ちょうど数年前に比べて外国人観光客が増えたかも〜と思っていたら、ニュースでも今年は観光客が増えたことを言っていました！外国の友人が日本へ遊びに来る時は、GWだけは避けた方が良いよーと伝えるのですが、今回、外国の観光客の方々を見て、人混みの多い都会を楽しむのも東京の観光ポイントの一つかもしれないですね！というところで、今週の #tbt #fbf は、欧米の結婚式と違う日本の結婚式で見られるある事です。

first, to explain a little about seating charts in japan. in western weddings, a seating chart may be found at the entrance into the wedding reception and guests find or are handed a name card with the table number of where to sit. in japan, all guests are handed something called a sekijihyo (or “seating chart”), which tells them exactly where to sit (not only the table number but also the exact seat, at which their name card will already be placed). this seating chart has all the guests’ full names, relation to the bride and/or groom, and if the guest is a work acquaintance, their job title as well.

欧米の結婚式で見られないのは『席次表』を渡される事です。欧米の『席次表』は、披露宴の入り口に大きくポスターやウェルカムボードの形をしたものが置いてある事が多いです。ウェルカムボードの近くにはゲストのネームカード（席札）がずらーっと並べてあり、テーブル番号ごとに並べてあったりします。それを持って、指定のテーブルへ行って座る位置を自分で選ぶ事が多いです。（もしくは、指定のテーブルのセンターにネームカードが置いてあり、自分で選んだ席にネームカードを置く事もあります。）ゲストの肩書きや新郎新婦との関係が書かれる事は無く、相手の事を知らない要素が他人との会話をスタートさせるきっかけになるのだと思います。

no matter the country or culture, the great thing about being a wedding item designer is that i can be creative, have fun, and see my clients and their guests enjoy the creativity.

最終的には、国や文化が違っても、ウェディングアイテムデザイナーとして一番楽しいのは、創造力を発揮できお客様とそのゲストの方々がそれをエンジョイしていただける事です。

to better myself, physically, mentally, and career-ly.

last year, i was able to start creating a foundation for my career. this year i will put it into shape.

新年の抱負。

健康、メンタル、仕事のそれぞれの面でより良くなる。

去年は、お仕事の土台作りを進めていました。今年は、それを形にしていこうと思います。

in japan, in place of holiday greeting cards, we send nengajou (new year’s greeting postcard) to friends, family, and clients to arrive on new year’s day. my last job of 2014 was designing a nengajou for a wedding planner friend.

as a designer, there’s jobs where i just can’t think of a great design, and there’s those that i have a genius moment that hits me with the perfect vision. this job was the latter. i was so excited to receive the postcard in the mail. like every one of my paper item designs, my projects aren’t complete until i see the finished product on paper. and especially when they are letterpress, even more excitement.

欧米では、クリスマスを含む宗教的なホリデーが１２月に集中します。そこで、１１月末の感謝祭を過ぎたら、一斉にホリデーカードが送られます。基本のメッセージは「Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!」と新年の挨拶もそこに含まれるパターンが多いです。日系人の私は、両方の習慣を楽しめることが大好きです。ホリデーカードのデザインと年賀状のデザインがかぶって大忙しですが、どちらも届くのが本当に嬉しいのです。

昨年の最後のお仕事は、ウェディングプランナーの友人に年賀状のデザインの依頼をいただきました。身近の人から「お仕事」をいただくと、どちらかというと楽しい「コラボ」と考えちゃいます。

どのデザイナーもあることだと思いますが、全くデザインが思い浮かばないお仕事と、突然ひらめくパターン。今回は紛れもなく後方でした。この年賀状が届くのが楽しみで楽しみで、珍しく毎日郵便受けを確認していました。私がデザインする全てのペーパーアイテムは、実物を見るまではデザイン完了と感じないのです。特に今回のように、レタープレス／活版印刷の場合は、もうwwww

asahi gardener skateboard design

a post about one of my favorite works so far. yesterday, hanging out with my friend, akira, we talked about the skateboard i designed for him.

it all started last year, when he asked me to design his company logo. his kanji character for “akira” is also read as “asahi” (sunrise). and for his birthday this year, i took a blank skateboard, and designed a double-sided “asahi gardener” skateboard.

これまでの自分の作品の中で一番好きとも言えるものを紹介します。昨日、友人のアキラ氏と話していて思い出したこの作品。

庭師をしている彼に、昨年「ロゴデザインしてよー」って言われて、、、まだ自信の欠片もない時期でしたが、旭（あきら）＝「あさひ」とも読むんだよ〜と、立ち上げた会社の名前の説明をしていてピンと来たデザインでした。今年のお誕生日プレゼントに「asahi gardener」ロゴをスケートボードの両面にデザインを入れてみたのです。

the process ／プロセス

the top side, i painted a blue to yellow gradient in acrylic. it had been a few years since i last held a paint brush… ／表面は、久々に手にした筆で旭グラデをアクリルで。

for the grip tape, i cut out his logo by hand (hand cutting curves on grip tape is quite a challenge). ／ザラザラのグリップテープからロゴを切り抜きました。（正直、紙ヤスリと同じような材質をカッターで丸く切り抜くの、、、大変でした。）

for the bottom side, i went simple with matte black. ／裏面のテーマはシンプルで存在感大なマットブラック。

and if anyone hasn’t noticed yet, i really do love using my cutter. this also was a painstaking process, cutting around the logo on masking tape. ／カッター作業が大好きなのです。ゆっくり慎重にマスキングを切り抜く作業。

but there’s something about stenciling and spray paint that gets me excited! i often stencil and spray on fabrics, but it all really started in junior high when i met spray paint at the craft store. (i literally went to the craft store once a week.) ／スプレー缶とステンシルは、本当にあがります。学生時代からお洋服に使用していましたが、始まりは中学校。毎週のように通っていたアート材料を売っているクラフトショップで出会ったのです。

i honestly can’t pick sides since that matte black touch has captured my monotone heart…. but sunrise gradient peeking through grip tape is priceless. ／どっちが好きかと聞かれても、選べないです。モノトーン好きな私からして、マットブラックのカッコよさがなんとも言えないんだけど、グリップテープから見える旭グラデも良いんだなー。。。

it’s that time of the week! #tbt/#fbf to this save the date from 2012 i designed for a “polaroid” themed wedding. ／ #tbt／#fbf の時間です！２０１２年にデザインしたポラロイドテーマの save the date ハガキ。

– the couple’s “song” lyrics are hidden in the postcard ／カップルの記念の歌の歌詞が隠れています

– beige background is a scan of textured cream colored paper (“save the date” and hearts are cut outs and show the textured background) ／ベージュの背景は凹凸のある紙をスキャンして使用（「save the date」とハート達は黒背景から切り抜いて背景を見せている）

in honor of throwback thursdays and flashback fridays, i want to post my past wedding item designs on fridays, japan time (which would mean it’s #tbt somewhere else in the world). and to start them all, here’s the very first wedding program i designed, which was for my brother’s wedding.

最近 sns のおかげで #tbt（スローバック・サーズデイ）や #fbf（フラッシュバック・フライデイ）というハッシュタグが流行っています。その旋風に乗って、これまでの私がデザインしたウェディングアイテムを金曜日（日本時間であれば、世界のどこかでは #tbt or #fbf になるはず）に紹介したいと思います。まず最初は、初めて作ったウェディングアイテム、兄のウェディングプログラムです。ウェディングプログラムとは、日本語で言う挙式の式次第の事です。

ASIAN THEMED WEDDING PROGRAM ／アジアンテーマのウェディング式次第

the groom is japanese, the bride is chinese. since both have kanji (chinese characters) names, i knew from the get go, to start with kanji stamps. although the wedding was in the states, since i live in tokyo, it was easy for me to have these stamps hand-crafted at a local stamp store here. ／新婦は中国系アメリカ人なので、両家とも漢字の名字があるため、ハンコが最初のデザインポイントでした。ウェディング事態はアメリカで開催されましたが、私自身は日本に住んでいるので、事前にデザインを考え、ハンコ屋さんに作っていただけました。特に中国語のお名前は、時には日本の漢字に存在しない事もあるので、今回はこちらが難点でした。

tools used: pearl card stock in purple & lime green / printable pearlescent paper in off white (it smudges! so be careful not to touch the ink until it dries!) / organza ribbon in bronze / clear emboss stamp ink / gold emboss powder / emboss heater / stamps / rubber cement
